Well, fine, I’m saying something about it anyway.

It just hurts to read One Piece at the moment. I rather wish Tashigi just wasn’t there. She’s one of my favourites, and her resolve at the end of Alabasta always makes me cry. But she’s going more and more downhill as a character. I just can’t catch her personality in the latest chapters anymore.

And despite all her determination and practice, she’ll never really develop or get to show her strength. Last week’s chapter got my hopes up, but they were crushed yet again. It’s just not enough that she wasn’t completely useless, I wanted her to have a real fight, on her own, and to win. I thought even Oda might’ve given her that, since it was woman-on-woman. But no. She was just a plot device to contrast Zoro’s badassery. She had a few nice moments, but they were overshadowed by her standing with her mouth open. And even her righteous anger (I’m using the term non-ironically) about Zoro’s sexism was reduced to a resigned sulkiness.

I’ve decided to just stop expecting anything from Oda anymore in this respect. It’s too depressing to have your dawning hope crushed over and over again. Tashigi will never be a truly strong and good character again.
